Roger Gerald Bailey, 80, passed away unexpectedly in Billings, Montana on Monday, August 21, 2017. He was born to the late Walter and Jean Bailey on July 15, 1937 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Roger attended schools in Bismarck and joined the Army, where he achieved Expert Marksmanship and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1961. He received his honorable discharge in December of 1963. He married Arlene VanderVorste and two children, Tammy and Terry, were born to that union. They later divorced.
During Roger’s career he worked for Benson Optical in Bismarck, ND and then moved to Billings, MT where he worked for Walman Optical as an Optical Technician. Upon retirement, Roger enjoyed shuttling rental cars for Thrifty Rental and also enjoyed working for Certified Folders as a Service and Sales Rep. Through these jobs, he met many wonderful people that became his close friends.
Roger was known for his love of the great outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and competitive shooting. He was an active member of the Yellowstone Rifle Club, where he spent many hours coaching and working at the rifle range. He enjoyed being a grandfather of four and great grandfather of two. Recent highlights include: a memorable Christmas vacation to Medford, OR with Terry and family, attending Austin’s Army Basic Training graduation in Fort Benning, GA with Tammy and family, celebrating his 80th birthday with a flight in an N-3 Bi-Plane, and watching great-granddaughter Adelina’s first rodeo in Billings, MT. Roger spent his last weekend fishing the Bighorn River with family.
Roger is survived by daughter, Tammy Bailey of Billings, MT and son, Terry Bailey (Jayme) of Medford, OR; Grandchildren: Shawnee Dicks (Morgan Manolis) of Hardin MT, Austin Dicks, Makenna and Caleb Bailey of Medford OR; great-grandchildren Adelina and Josie Manolis; siblings Lorraine Bourgois and Walter “Corky” Bailey; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held on Monday, August 28th at Yellowstone National Cemetery, 55 Buffalo Trail Rd, Laurel, MT at 2:00 pm with military honors. A reception will follow at 2817 Lewis Ave.
