On the afternoon of August 6th our father Melvin Theodore “Ted” Bakken Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Riverstone Hospice following a short battle with cancer.
Ted was born July 18th 1940 in Sidney, MT to Melvin Theodore and Margaret Adell Bakken. Dad attended school in Sidney graduating from Sidney High School in 1958. Following graduation dad enlisted in the US Navy, serving and travelling the world from 1958 to 1961.
Dad met the love of his life, Marilyn Smith in Sidney, MT. They were married May 29, 1965 in Sidney, with the couple living in several locations including Jamestown, ND and Bozeman, MT. They became a family along the way with the birth of sons Michael and Steven, eventually settling in Billings, MT in 1974.
Ted worked as a ticket agent for Northwest Airlines for 33 years retiring in 2000. Upon retiring, Dad and Mom spent time travelling and searching out the best local eateries.
Growing up dad was a supportive and involved father; active in our various sporting events, regular trips to the great outdoors, and travelling around the country. He was a dedicated father, husband, and brother; treasuring time spent with family and friends. He was always available to lend a hand in home improvement projects, and to let you know “what you should’ve done” during and after project completion.
After the passing of his wife of 42 years, Dad spent time having coffee/breakfast with friends as well as many hours walking his corgi Copper around the neighborhood and Norms island. During these walks he and Copper met many new friends both two and four legged.
While this is a time of great sadness, the family would rather think of this as an opportunity to celebrate the life of a good and decent man. Pops, we’ll miss your strength, good-heartedness, and guidance. We’ll love you forever.
Ted was preceded in death by his mother and father and sisters Kay Albright and Melva Jean Petersen.
Ted is survived by his sons Michael Bakken of Billings, MT and Steve (Jenny) Bakken of Buffalo, WY. Sister Pat Christofferson of Spokane, WA, brother Marty(Barb)Bakken of Bozeman, MT, sister Dodie(Butch)Clapper of Billings, MT, sister Jacque(Calvin) Bucklin of Great Falls, MT and grandchildren Abi, Gabe, Lila, and Erik.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Cremation & Funeral Gallery. A private burial will be held at a later date in Sidney, MT.
In memory of Dads love of the outdoors and staying active, the family requests that in lieu flowers, memorials be made to Yellowstone River Parks Association, PO Box 1201, Billings, MT 59103
