Dever Sue Casey Aves Bouwkamp
Dever Sue “Deb” Bouwkamp, passed away on February 18, 2019, at the age of 72. She was born January 8, 1947, in Suffern, NY. She grew up in McHenry, IL, graduated from McHenry High School in 1965. The family migrated to California in 1967.
In 1972, Deb married Leonard J Aves. They were married for 18 years and divorced in 1990.
In 1995, Deb met and married the LOVE OF HER LIFE, Marvin J. Bouwkamp. They were married for 23 years. Marvin passed away October 28, 2018, and he will always be her Keeper Of the Stars.
Deb was dedicated to breeding, training, and competing with her Golden Retrievers. She bred them for 27 years; she offered training classes for 24 years; she taught obedience classes for Adult Education off and on for 10 years. She went to school in June, 1995 to learn how to train service dogs and did that for 27 years, under Service Canines of Montana. She also volunteered at the Deaconess Psych Center and St. Vincent’s with her loving dog Beau. And both hospitals donated money toward her Service Dog Training Program.
In 2004, Deb started the Prison Paws for Humanity dog program at the Montana Women’s Prison in Billings, MT. It started out as a volunteer program and ended up with a contract. She was proud of the program, the women, and what they had accomplished. She ran the program for 7 years when budget cuts took her job. She was hopeful that the program would continue.
She also took care of her parents for the last 19 years of their life and she did not regret any of it. She also enjoyed working with the residents at Billings Health and Rehab where she also worked for several years.
Deb was very glad when her sister Linda decided to move to Montana in 2005, so they could make up for lost years. Sadly, Linda passed away from lung cancer on December 31, 2011.
Deb was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, her mom Mae G. Casey, her dad Walter J. Casey, her sister Linda M. Weber, 3 aunts and her beloved Heart Dogs – Beau, Springtime, Billie, Millie, Gabe, Fleischman, Turk and Tracker and her good friends, Sheila and Donna.
She is survived by her father’s sister Jo Ann Jackson and two very close friends Dale Anderson and Ann Hopkins (each of which were met through her dogs) and many women that have stayed in touch with Deb from the Prison Program. And thank you to Linda’s very good friend, Carol Byrd, who has stayed a friend through everything and Sandra Shaver, who may be taking over her business.
She is also survived by her and Marvin’s dog, Wiggles, and the wonderful friends who have been with her through this journey the last 6 months, Ann Hopkins, Dale Anderson, Carol, Byrd, Sandra Shaver, Yvonne Penne and Mike Penne.
She came to do a job and she did it! Her job is done and she is needed elsewhere.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Compassus and the Golden Retriever Club of America foundation.
Service will be held on March 9, 2019 at 11 am at Cremation & Funeral Gallery. To honor Deb, please attend in the appropriate attire of blue jeans and a sweatshirt.
