Eugene (Gene) Daum, 81, passed away Sunday evening, July 12, 2020.

Gene was born January 10, 1939 in Edgar, MT to parents Jake and Emma Daum.

Throughout his school years, Gene excelled at sports.  He often said that if it was not for sports, he would never have finished high school!  He graduated from Winnett High School in 1957 and it was in school that he started dating Velma Johnson.  Gene and Velma were united in marriage on May 6, 1961.  They had two children and settled in to ranching life, with the majority of that time spent working for Doug and Oleta Delaney for almost 18 years.  Gene loved working on the ranch.  Whether it was haying or tending to the cattle, he was hard working and always had a “get it done” philosophy.  It was not a job, but a way of life that he loved and missed till his last day.

Gene and Velma purchased the grocery/hardware store in Grass Range in July of 1984 and ran it until June of 2009.  While operating Daum’s Store, Gene was known for his meat processing.  He spent many hours a day and night cutting up beef for local ranchers.  When he was not working in the store/hardware or cutting beef, he could be found mowing his lawn.  Gene was meticulous in his yard work and took great pride in having a beautiful place.  Gene took care of the lawn and Velma tended to the flowers.  They loved the Grass Range community and were proud to call it home.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Emma Daum; his brothers, Bill, Ted, Dick, Jack and Ronnie; his sister Donna Rabern;  and his wife Velma.

He is survived by his son, Brad, daughter-in-law, Patty and his grandchildren Dexter and Jessica Daum; his daughter Terri, ex-husband Dale Myers and his grandchildren Taylor and Presley Myers; his sister Mona Abrahams.

Cremation has taken place, with a private family graveside service planned to lay his ashes next to his beloved, Vel, in the Grass Range Cemetery.  A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Gene’s life will take place in Grass Range at a later date.
