Mary Gertrude (Roy) Denton October 8, 1911 – December 21, 2015.
Mary G Denton was born in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, October 8, 1911 of Jacob Wilfred and Mary Ellen (Peel) Roy. She was the youngest of eight children. She had three sisters and four brothers. She was the last Roy of that generation.
She went home to be with the Lord December 21, 2015. She was a long time resident of Saint John’s Lutheran Home in Billings, MT.
Mary, more affectionately known as Mom, Nana, Grandma and Little Grandma, grew up in an era with more changes in the world than most will ever know. Her stories of childhood experiences and escapades growing up on Sugar Island, which was a homestead on an island between Sault St Marie, Michigan and Canada., were always interesting and for the most part, humorous. One of the outstanding qualities of mom’s life was her lack of critical judgement of others, her family and friends always knew she loved us, unconditionally. Mom was seldom heard to say anything negative about anyone. She always believed the best in everyone and chose to live in the positive. Once her granddaughter Mary said, “grandma, you would have something good to say about the devil wouldn’t you?” With a sheepish grin she replied, “he does his job well!”
Mom was known by most who knew her, to be one of the best cooks that ever served a meal. Her son-in-law, Tommy, always said she could take old coffee grounds and stale bread and make a delicious dish. That may me a stretch, but not by much.
Mom loved her family and always enjoyed her time with us. She tried to stay in touch with all of us, as much as possible. She would send cards with two dollar bills to the great and great-great grandchildren until she moved into the nursing home at St John’s.
Mary, Mom, Nana, Grandma, and Little Grandma is going to be missed, but she left a legacy of unconditional love, kindness, hard work and selflessness that will be a challenge for all of us who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Denton and husband, George W Denton.
She is survived by two step children, George(Lily) Denton, Te-ata(Don) Mueller, three sons James(Vivian) DeLisle, Douglas (Debbie) Denton,Del (Lori) Denton, and one daughter, Charliene (Tommy) Price, 29 grandchildren, 64 greatgrandchildren, and 26 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 23, 3:30 pm at Saint John’s in the Ocee Johnson Chapel, located in Chapel Court. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Saint John’s Lutheran Ministries Resident Need Fund, 3940 Rimrock Rd., Billings MT 59102.
