Cleona Green went home to be with the Lord on November 5th, 2017. Her vibrant faith sustained her through her entire life. Knowing that her days were numbered, she expressed excitement about meeting God soon. She mused about what kind of transfer station there was for getting from this life to the next and how good it would be to see her husband again.
Cleona was born on September 11, 1930 in Helena Montana to David and Cleona Smith. She was always thankful for her wonderful parents. After graduating from Helena High School, she attended the University of Montana and Eastern Montana College, receiving her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She met John Green in 1951 on a blind date. Six weeks later they were married. They were married for 52 years until John’s death. She taught school in Missoula while John finished Pharmacy School. Together they owned and ran Gorham Park Drug for 20 years while she taught in the Billings Public Schools. Cleona raised two children, Cindy Green and David Green. Somewhere in the middle of all that, she earned her Master’s Degree in School Counseling from EMC. She retired after 28 years of teaching 5th grade. She loved kids and loved teaching.
Cleona was particularly fond of travelling and seeing other cultures. Following their retirement, Cleona and John took a 60 day cruise around South America. Her best memories were of the many travels she and John experienced together both in the US and abroad. Her favorite trip was a pilgrimage to Israel in 1977.
Cleona is survived by a brother, Robert Smith; her son David (Gail) Green, seven grandchildren; Ariel, Jonathan and Allegra Green; John, Kate, and Kevin Murray; and Brady Ellington. She is survived by three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband John Green (1928-2004), daughter Cyndie Welchans, (1957-2016).
A Memorial Service will be held at Westpark Village on November 9th at 11:00 am.
