Berthelda “Bertie” Gerdes Hanson
A beautiful spirit left her earthly body to join her family in Heaven. Bertie, as she was known to most, passed away October 18th after battling cancer for many months.
Bertie was born October 26, 1934 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Martin and Hilda Gerdes. They moved to a family farm in Eureka, SD and later to Aberdeen where Bertie graduated from Central High. She moved to Billings to attend college where she met and married Ron Hanson. They proceeded to have five children: Christine, Mike, Bob, Larry, and Tim. In the mid-sixties she became an LPN. Divorcing while her children were young, Bertie worked at St. Vincent Hospital while raising her family. She retired after 31 years in nursing. Most recently she worked in the breakfast and lunch programs at Poly and Highland Schools. She adored working amidst the children.
Bertie was a kind and loving soul who cared deeply for others and held a huge soft spot for animals. She was resourceful and talented with unlimited energy for arts and crafts, baking cakes, and crocheting beautiful afghans. She was an avid bowler in the Plaza and Tuesday night leagues at Fireside Lanes. She was a devout Catholic and Eucharistic minister at St. Pat’s Cathedral. She was quite involved with Cursillo for many years. Her faith was such an important part of her life and God was waiting with open arms.
Bertie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Carolyn Biggs. She is survived by her children: Christine Voeller, Mike (Sherry), Bob (Lietta), Larry, and Tim (Jeanette). She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Donna Sewell, Vivian Nickerson, Susan Crawford, and her brother Dean Gerdes along with many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Vincent Hospital and the invaluable assistance of Riverstone Hospice and Nurse Heidi. Words do not suffice. Thank you Tim and Jeanette for such loving care of mom these past months.
Beautiful Lady……….may you now rest in peace.
Funeral services are pending at this time. Cremation and Funeral Gallery in Billings is assisting the family and condolences may be left at www.cfgbillings.com.
