William “Bill” Hoagland moved to heaven on Jan. 10, 2019 at the age of 90.

Bill was born to Will & Linda Hoagland at the family home-stead east of Rapelje on Sept. 17, 1928.

He attended a one-room country school, graduated from Rapelje HS, & attended Billings Polytechnic (Rocky Mountain College).

Bill served in the US Army during the Korean War. Upon his return to MT, he farmed the family homestead with his parents & brother growing wheat, barley, hay and beef cattle.

In 1962, Bill met & married the love of his life, Claire Herstedt. Bill & Claire built their home 3 miles east of the homestead, where they raised their children (Paul, Heidi & Laurie).

Bill enjoyed flying, farming, ranching, welding, wiring, building, hunting, skiing, traveling, camping, fishing, playing pinochle, gardening, picnics with family & friends… and, of course, baking pies. He was an American Legion member, Boy Scout leader, 4-H leader, Stillwater Farm Service Agency County Committee member, Broadview Community Center Board member, & charter member of the Broadview Lions Club. Bill & Claire were members of the Broadview Lutheran Church & The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Billings.

Throughout his life, Bill’s love for kids was only exceeded by the love kids had for him. Grandpa Bill was involved as a volunteer at Arrowhead Elementary School, helping students with reading & math. He also worked as a crossing guard on Rimrock Road. In addition to his work with Arrowhead, Bill volunteered with Billings Head Start in the “Reading Rocks” program & helped with their gardens. He also packed school backpacks for Head Start & Tumbleweeds.

Thank you to all of his dear friends & family that shared LIFE with him! During his last years, Bill lived at Liggett Cottage. We want to express our deepest & most sincere thanks to the staff & volunteers who loved our dad. Thank you for sharing (and listening to) stories while providing tender care, compassion and grace, to ALL of us. To all who knew & loved Bill… you are treasured!
