Sarah DeLyle Scott Jarvis, 101, of Billings, formerly of Sidney passed away July 22, 2019 in Billings, MT. DeLyle and her twin sister, Dorothy Scott Stoltz were born on June 10, 1918 in the small town of Hingham, Montana, where their family homesteaded. The family later moved to Lambert, MT, where her father was a grain buyer for the Occident Elevator Company. She graduated from Lambert High School, and afterwards attended Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings. In August of 1937, she and Bob Jarvis were married at St. Philomena’s Catholic Church in Sidney where they raised three children: Scott, Phillip and Lynn. They resided in Sidney until Bob’s death in January of 1974.
In 1961, DeLyle went to work at the Title Company in Sidney, where she would work for the next 20 years doing title work, insurance claims and real estate. In 1971, she was instrumental in the establishment of the J.K. Ralston Art Center in Sidney, later named the Mon-Dak Historical Center. She also worked with the group that published in 1976 the anthology “Courage Enough”, a collection of family stories of homesteaders in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota, for which she wrote the forward. A copy is in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
After Bob’s death, DeLyle made several moves between Woodland, CA and Billings, MT to live near family. In Billings, she enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and completed an embroidered tablecloth – which she said took her 10 years. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She celebrated her 100th birthday with a family reunion weekend in June of 2018. DeLyle’s one regret in turning 100 was that she could no longer wear her beloved high heel shoes. Her secret to her longevity was a positive attitude and the motto, “no matter what happens in life…Just Carry On!”
She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Bettise; her children: Scott, Phillip (Jan) and Lynn Bersin (Ty Paine); six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and special niece, Cheryl Ikeda.
Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday July 30, 2019 at Cremation & Funeral Gallery in Billings, MT.
A Funeral Mass at St. Matthew’s Church in Sidney, and interment of ashes at the Sidney Cemetery will take place at a later date.
