George Hubert (Hu) Matthews went home to his Lord, January 26, 2020.
Hu was born April 12, 1930 in Kingston, NY. He earned a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. Hu began his linguist career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a research assistant and continued there as a professor of linguist until 1974.
In 1972 Hu came to Crow Agency, MT as the director of the Crow Bilingual Program, to oversee the writing of the Crow language. Within a few months of arriving at Crow, he met the love of his life and wife-to-be, Clara Buchfink. Through Clara, Hu met his second love, Jesus Christ. In 1973, Hu and Clara were married in Hardin and he gained an instant family of a son and four daughters.
With Clara by his side, Hu continued his work with the Crow language, working as a Wycliffe Bible Translator and as a professor at Montana State University until 1981. Upon moving to Billings, Hu followed his calling and worked solely as a Bible translator on the Crow Bible until his retirement in 2017. As a result of Hu’s efforts, and with the support of the Crow People, the entire New Testament was translated into the Crow language.
In 2010, Clara suffered a stroke, resulting in their move to Highgate Senior Living. As Clara’s primary caregiver, his love and care for her is an inspiration to all who know them. Hu’s greatest joy in life was his beautiful wife of 46 years.
Hu is survived by his wife, Clara; daughter-in-law, M. Kathleen Martin; daughters Carrie (Mike) Hirst, Brenda (Gary) Kehler, Colleen Buchfink and Violet Cox. Hu has 8 grandchildren and 6 precious great-grandchildren.
Hu is proceeded in death by his parents George and Barbara Matthews, his brothers Robert and Richard (Rim) Matthews and son Gary Buchfink.
A special thank you to Betty Henderson and Gil and Mildred Meroney for their love and support over the years. Also a special thank you to Highgate Senior Living staff for their dedication and support for both Hu and Clara’s care during their time at Highgate.
Thanks to Highgate Senior Living, a Celebration of Life will be held February 1, 2020 at 3 PM at Highgate Senior Living, 3980 Parkhill Drive, Billings, MT.
