Gary Stephen Messer
Gary Messer, 66, passed away at Billings Clinic on August 10, 2017, following a heart attack at his home last week.
Gary was born December 1, 1950 in Billings, Montana, the second child of John and Cecelia (Lutgen) Messer. He attended Holy Rosary Grade School, Lewis and Clark and West High School, later achieving his GED.
On October 25, 1985 he married the love of his life, Sharon Lynn Boyce Hull in Billings at Faith Chapel. Beginning with that ceremony and a Las Vegas honeymoon, they enjoyed 31 years together. Their devotion to each other has been an example to us all.
Gary was a natural athlete – active in team sports, beginning with Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, then basketball at Holy Rosary and Lewis and Clark; later playing City Rec for the Iams Concrete team. He was a competitive league bowler with Sharon Lynn for years at Sunset Bowl. He also enjoyed golfing with Leonard Hash and Doug Arneson.
A dedicated, skilled and hard worker, Gary worked as chef at the Sheraton Hotel and the Petroleum Club. His enjoyment of cooking and good food was shared with family and friends at barbecues, and as he and Sharon Lynn volunteered for lodge breakfasts at the Moose Club and the Montana Fair booth.
He joined Messer Construction with his brother, Greg, in Billings in the 1980s; later employed with Elliot Inn and Wells Fargo, where he managed several bank remodels around Montana. He could build or fix anything, and was willing to teach if you were interested and listened to his instruction.
In 2007, Gary contracted West Nile virus, which left him with a weakened immune system. Sharon Lynn faithfully and steadfastly served and cared for Gary through the years of declining physical health. He is now finally and forever free from pain.
Those who will miss him include his loving wife, Sharon Lynn; mother, Cecelia; brother, Greg Messer; sisters: Gloria (Doug) Iams, Sharon Thornburg, Donna (Gene) Holden, and Cindy (Don Jr) Epperson; Sisters-in-law: Carol Six (Gary), Colleen (Doug) Arneson, Esther Franklin (James); brother-in-law Roger Boyce; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his father, John; nephew, Kirk Thornburg; mother-in-law, Lela Fiske Boyce; and brother-in-law, Leonard Hash.
We wish to thank the emergency responders, Dr. Manny Baumgartner and ICU caregivers, for their compassionate care for Gary and his family.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm, at Cremation and Funeral Gallery, 29 8th St West.
