Freda Eldora Menda Rolf, born October 23, 1926, died peacefully in her own bed on March 20, 2019 at the age of 92. She has rejoined her husband, Martin Thomas “Hink” Rolf, and her brother, Roger Franklin Menda in the Lord’s eternal kingdom.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Freda spent most of her youth living with her Grandmother, Mary McGinnis Dillow, in Coal Grove, Ohio. After completing high school there, she entered nursing school at Speers Memorial Hospital in Dayton, Kentucky, and it was there that she met the tool and die maker known to everyone as Hink who became her husband of thirty five years. Freda and Hink had one son, David, who died shortly after birth, and one daughter, Sheri Lynn.
Freda had a great smile and loved to laugh. She enjoyed drawing and painting, a talent that she discovered early in life when she drew costumes for her paper dolls. One of her proudest accomplishments was completing her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Northern Kentucky University which she did by completing evening courses while working full-time as a Registered Nurse. Because she was only able to attend evening classes, the degree took a long time to complete and required incredible determination and dedication. She was able to finish her degree so that both mother and daughter graduated from college on the same day.
Freda loved all animals, but especially cats. There was always a cat in her house, or it might be more accurate to acknowledge that it was actually the cat’s house, and the cat let Freda live there.
Freda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Sheri Lynn Rolf, and Bradley Jack Finn. Freda is also survived by “Sammy”, her feline companion of 23 years.
Dr. Rolf and her husband wish to thank all of Freda’s caregivers, especially Dr. Shelley Castles and her staff, the care partners at Highgate Assisted Living, and the staff of Riverstone Hospice.
A Memorial Service celebrating Freda’s life will be held at Heights Family Funeral Home on Thursday, March 28, at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter or Yellowstone Chamber Players.
