Alton ‘Al’ Edward Simpson


Alton (Al) Edward Simpson, 92, of Billings passed away Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Hospice House of Billings, MT.

Al was born December 15, 1925, to Carl and Esther Rasmussen Simpson in Havre, Montana, where he attended the first eight years of school.  Moving with his family to Great Falls, MT. and on to Billings where he graduated from Billings Senior High School.

In August 1943, he enlisted at age 17, in the Marine Corp. for duty during World War II. In January, 1944, he shipped out to the Pacific area and had duty stations in Hawaii, Samoa, Saipan, and saw combat in the Okinawa Campaign.

In September, 1945, Al went with liberation forces to China with the 6th Marine Division to Tiensin, then Peking (now Beijing) and on to Tsingtaos, headquarters of all Marines in China.

After 27 months overseas, he returned to San Diego and received his honorable discharge, in April 1946.  He then returned to Billings, MT.  Al attended Eastern Montana College for two years and one year at the University of Montana.  Thereafter, Al spent 46 years tending bars at popular supper clubs in the 50’s and 60’s.  Many years he spent tending to patrons at the Hitching Post Lounge at the Billings International Airport as well at the Golden Belle Salon at the Northern Hotel.  Later in life, Al enjoyed his time with Jeff and Darnell at the Road Runner garage, as well as all the other Road Runner friends in Billings, Mt.

Al’s greatest joys included travel, camping, fishing, music, piddling at home, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6774, and a life member of the Marine Corp League, Eugene Sara Detachment.

Al was married to Beverly Gail Hudson (deceased), and raised four sons, Greg (deceased)(Kathleen), Kevin (Kathy) of Billings, Brett of Missoula, and Mark (Alicia) of Bellevue, WA. Also, eight (8) grandchildren: EJ, Brian (Bobby Jo), Nick, Devin (Theo), Brenna (Marshall), Brandon, Kyler, and Cole, and seven (7) great grandchildren, Davlin & Kietrich, Zach & Zarika, Silas & Lyla, and Emberlinn.

Cremation has taken place and interment at Yellowstone National Cemetery with military honors are planned for a later date. Please no flowers, donations to the Marine Corp. League would be appreciated.
