His mind wanted to keep battling but his body would not let him.

Dad was born in Billings on June 2, 1949, the son of Roy Hoke and Lydia (Reichel) Hoke. Dad was raised in Belfry until 1955 and then moved to the Bull Mountains until 1956. He spent the remainder of his childhood in Lockwood where he attended school and graduated from Senior High in 1967. He immediately went to work at the Pierce Packing Plant.

Dad met the love of his life, Shellie Klundt, and the two were married on April 3, 1970. Together they raised five kids. Dennis and Shellie were active in wrestling, football, or anything their kids were involved in. Dad’s kids meant the world to him and he would always put the kid’s first, even during his toughest days. His grandkids turned him into a teddy bear and he would spoil them like no other with garage sale toys and candy.

After Pierce Packing closed, Dad went to school and got his degree in business at the Billings VoTech. He then assisted in the demolition of Pierce Packing and also worked for Sundown Security until the cancer would not let him work anymore.

Dennis is survived by his three sons, Tad (Lisa) Hoke, Troy Hoke (Heather Bailey), Trever (Kristin) Hoke; two daughters Wilda Hoke (Steve Guy), and Quinta Hoke (Devon Bly); seven grandchildren, Tad’s kids, Taylor Hoke, Lainee Hoke, Trenton Hoke and Leighton Hoke who will arrive in August, Troy’s daughter Alex Zyph, Trever’s kid’s, Garet Hoke and Ainslie Hoke. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Hoke and his wife Gerri.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father Roy, his mother Lydia, his wife Shellie, his son Wilmer and grandson Johnathan.

We would like to thank all the care and support that was given to our dad at the Frontier Cancer Center. Also thank you to Kevin and Beth and the Outpatient Center, Dad loved his water aerobics and the friends he made there. Thank you to the Hospice House Nurses for all your support for dad at the end.

Special thanks to the staff at the Hospice House for taking such great care of our mom/grandmother/great-grandmother, for getting to know all of us, and especially Irene, for taking care of her needs when she and we couldn’t, and for making her final weeks with us special. We appreciate your enthusiasm when her great-grandkids stopped by on their bikes after school for a quick kiss and always-fresh cookie, for the late evening family gatherings, and for welcoming her “grand dogs” visits. Thanks for the room with a clear view of the playground and baseball fields where her great-grandchildren play and spend most of their evenings. And thanks to the deer, ducks, and rabbits who stopped to say hello just outside her window.

Jean Hamm passed away in the early morning of April 3, 2013 after several years of suffering from Alzheimers. Born Jean Marie Cunningham in McHenry, ND on January 18, 1922, she was the second of six children born to Paul & Gertrude Cunningham. Shortly after Jean’ s birth, the family moved back to the Cunningham farm near Pipestone, MN due to her father’s health. While living with Grandmother Jennie & Grandfather Charles, the girls were required to see their grandmother every day before school for a clothing inspection. This is probably where Jean picked up the adages that she shared with her daughters when they weren’t quite happy with their outfits, “You’ll never see it on a race horse!” or “All it needs is a red belt!”

Jean graduated from high school and attended the University of Minnesota where she met and fell in love with Milton Hamm. They were married in 1941 and she discontinued her college studies. Jean lived in various ports of call while Milton was in the US Navy including Boston and New Orleans. During the time her children were born they lived on a farm outside of Cambridge, Minnesota and, seasonally, in a tarpaper shack in the woods of Northern Minnesota where Milton was a lumberjack. She perfected the wood stove angel food cake using a mixing bowl with a salmon can for the tube.

The family moved to Billings in 1955 where Jean was a waitress at The Turf, owner/operator of Jean’s Café, kitchen manager at The Crystal Lounge and waitress for many years at The Windmill when it was on 1st Avenue South.

Raising 4 kids presented a fair share of challenges through the teenage years; Jean was “Mom” to many more than her own. The capers and escapades of the Hamm household reside in the memories of scores of high school friends.

After her divorce from Milton in the late 1970s, she met and married Jack McDonnell and they began several years of ranch work in the Musselshell area of Montana and near Big Piney and Pinedale, Wyoming where they cultivated many rich friendships. They endeared themselves to the local populace by transporting a bounteous supply of Montana grown corn and tomatoes that they would sell in a parking lot for a fair price from the back of an old white hearse. They also did a short stint in Nebraska as well as spending many months in Pipestone, MN, assisting Jean’s brother Charlie and his wife Marsine when Charlie had cancer. Jack and Jean were a good team always willing to lend a helping hand and a strong back—they went the extra mile with a smile. After retiring from the ranch life, they moved back to Billings where they lived for many years on Howard Avenue.

Jean was well known for her pies, angel food cakes, breads and cookies. She always had a batch of Oatmeal Crispies on hand for any visitor. Even her mail carriers were often greeted at the door with a plate of fresh from the oven cookies or cinnamon rolls. As she developed Alzheimer’s her greatest dismay came from forgetting an ingredient in one of her favorite recipes and having it fail.

Jean is survived by her children, Bruce Hamm (Marilyn) in Billings, Gayle Sisson in Florence, OR, Barbara Lerma (Tony), Anchorage, AK and Bob Hamm (Sue) in Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren, Kendra (Dave) Brooks, Kim Hamm; Carlo & Dino (Teresa) DeAngelis, Sean Sisson; Kyla Lumpkin and great-grandchildren, Will Brooks, Taylor & Boston DeAngelis; Brittany and Brianna Brock and Audrie Lumpkin. Jean is also survived by two sisters, Lois (Morris) Houg and Grace Halverson, many nieces & nephews and great nieces and nephews

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in May 2012 and granddaughter, Paula Hamm in 1971. We would love to meet with friends of Jean in Billings for a celebration of her wonderful, loving, crazy life at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers or contribution to Jean’s favorite charity, we ask you to spend time with those you love, hug them and kiss them and bake them some cookies.

Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery.

Donna was born on March 3, 1939. She married the love of her life, James Nagel, in 1955, and they made their home in Billings, Montana where they raised their two daughters, Jaime and Sue.

Donna took pride in her many hobbies, including sewing clothing for her daughters, stitch work, gardening, and reading. Her most prized moments included being with her family and friends. Donna was naturally a compassionate caregiver and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

She is loved and survived by her husband James Nagel; her two daughters Sue Sherman and Jaime (Lynn) Carpenter; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley (Eugene) Spilde and Alice (Ken) Grosgebauer.

Donna’s family would like to send a special thank you to the staff and friends at Aspen Meadows for the loving care and support she received throughout the final years of her life.

You will be forever missed. We Love you.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, May 17, 2013 at Cremation & Funeral Gallery.
